MARGAO
That the Margao Municipal Council failed to treat even a kilogram of wet waste dumped at the Sonsodo waste management plant at Sonsodo is evident by the fact that around 8,930 cubic metres of piled waste was found stacked inside the shed till the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) took up the work of carting out the waste for remediation.
Take note, the GWMC had in the year 2020 carted out waste piled up inside the shed and remediated the same at a cost of Rs 85 lakhs. It’s not clear how much will the ongoing operation carried out by the GWMC-appointed contactor cost the civic body.
A glance at the GWMC status report filed in the High Court revealed the extent of waste stacked inside the Sonsodo Waste Management shed and how the shed is being cleared of the piled up waste.
The report states that a total station survey conducted by GWMC has revealed an estimated 8,930 cubic metres of piled waste inside the waste management shed. The report further states that the contractor has so far remediated approx 2,500 cubic metres of waste.
“The GWMC has shifted 80 per cent of the mix waste dumped inside the shed in the open land reclaimed by remediation of Sonsoddo dump and the same was aerated by windrows method, for drying the waste (to reduce moisture content) and in order to ensure effective screening of the waste”, the report stated.
The balance 20 per cent waste shall be cleared from the shed before February end and the same will be remediated by end of May 2024, the report stated.
