PANAJI: The Goa Children’s Court on Thursday acquitted famed Goan singer Remo Fernandes of charges of abusing a minor girl back in 2015.
Remo was booked after the girl complained that he abused her at the Goa Medical College Hospital ward where she was recuperating after she was injured in an accident having been knocked down by a car driven by Remo’s son Jonas.
Remo’s advocate Rajeev Gomes informed that Fernandes was found not guilty in a verdict pronounced on Thursday.
The incident dates back to December 2015 when the car knocked down a young girl who was on a walking pilgrimage from her native of Malvan in Maharashtra to Old Goa for the feast of St Francis Xavier that year injuring her.
Remo visited her and offered her compensation but the girl alleged that she was abused by Remo within the hospital ward after she refused the compensation he offered.
Based on her complaint, the Remo was charged with verbally abusing the girl under the Goa Children’s Act. The chargesheet was filed by the police in 2016.
Fernandes was earlier granted bail by the court in the case and pleaded not guilty and agreed to stand trial.
