Denouncing the haphazard reservation process for the civic elections, former Mapusa chairperson Sudhir Kandolkar on Friday said the government had failed to follow the principle of natural justice while reserving the wards and this would cost the BJP dearly in the elections.
The former chairperson also said lack of development has brought diverse political parties and citizens under a common platform of ‘Mapshekarancho Ekvot’ to bring about a change in Mapusa.
“Yes, the reservation has caused huge injustice to a lot of people in the State. For example, Ward 4 in Mapusa was reserved for OBC last time and this time it’s once again reserved for women. So someone who wants to contest in a general ward has to wait for 10 years? This is not fair,” Kandolkar said
The former chairperson was addressing the media after filing his nomination papers from Ward 19 in Mapusa Municipal Council. Six other candidates have also filed their nominations that will jointly fight the election under the banner of ‘Mapshekarancho Ekvot’.
Continuing, Kandolkar said natural justice was not followed while reserving the wards.
“The 10 wards which were reserved in the last election should have been made general this time. The BJP will have to face the wrath of the voters for carrying such a mean act,” he said.
He said ‘Mapshekarancho Ekvot’ will have Congress, MGP, Goa Forward and even some BJP karyakartas that will contest the municipal elections and work for the development of Mapusa.
“All people of Mapusa have come together to bring about development of Mapusa and complete all the major pending projects that have been dodging the town for a very long time,” Kandolkar said.
He said the Rs 80 crore sewerage project which is very crucial for the people of Mapusa was still not completed after almost eight years.
Similarly, he said, work on the new bus-stand project has failed to kick off despite laying of the foundation stone on numerous occasions.
He further said ‘Mapshekarancho Ekvot’ will field candidates in all 20 wards and expects to triumph in at least 14 wards.
The following candidates filed nominations under the banner of ‘Mapshekarancho Ekvot’: Tarak Arolkar (Ward 7), Vijayta Naik (Ward 15), Sudhir Kandolkar (Ward 19), Viraj Phadte (Ward 17), Vikas Arolkar (Ward 8) and Shanshank Subhash Narvekar (Ward 5).
