Social activists and local residents have expressed fears that plastic waste left behind by the stalls erected along the main road during the Colva Fama festivities may inundate the fields if not collected and disposed of immediately.
In fact, tons of plastic was left behind along the main road as curtains almost came down on the Colva Fama festivities in the tourist village. A local resident Thomas Rodrigues claimed action initiated by the FDA against the unhygienic food stalls has not stopped the plastic waste from inundating the area.
“The waste, mostly packing plastic lay scattered all along the road side. If not cleared immediately, the waste may find its way in the fields, causing an environmental problem,” Thomas said.
Social activist Judith Almeida echoed similar sentiments and raised concerns over the delay in clearing the waste.
“There are many stalls which are still standing along the road. This is what the stalls, which have so far closed, has left for us, the villagers,” she added.
When The Goan contacted Sarpanch Anthony Fernandes on Friday to shed light on the plastic waste menace generated at the fair, he said the panchayat has drawn up plans to clear the entire area on Saturday.
“We are aware of the plastic waste left behind at the venue of the fair. The panchayat will clean up the entire area so that the waste does not find its way in the fields,” Anthony added.
