MAPUSA
After successfully halting the work of construction of second sewage treatment plant at Camarcazana-Mapusa, the Tenants Association of Camarcasanacho Bundh and residents of Wards 7 and 8 of the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) have now demanded removing the two wards from the civic body and giving it the status of village panchayat.
The two wards of Mapusa were added to Aldona constituency while carrying out the delimitation process of the assembly constituencies in the State in 2008.
The residents have also called for review of the Outline Development Plan for Mapusa since objections raised by locals have not been considered by the authority concerned.
In a letter addressed to Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho, the residents said the areas of Xettio-vaddo, Bilou, Peddem, Acoi and Camarcazana from Wards 7 and 8 be made into a separate village panchayat.
“Since the residents of the two wards come under the influence of two MLAs, many times the locals are confused and do not know which MLA to approach in times of need. Many times, the MLAs themselves refuse to take up our grievances directing us to approach the other MLA,” said a resolution signed by the
locals.
“Moreover, government funds and other development works in the wards get hampered due to the confusion,” the resolution added.
The resolution further said the panchayat status would be more beneficial for the locals of the two wards, as the fee structure by way of house tax and other licences would be much lower.
In another resolution, the residents have demanded that all high-rise building constructions proposed and carried out in the illegally converted land be stopped forthwith.
“We have a simple demand from the government. Since our two wards have been plucked from Mapusa constituency and added to Aldona, declare our two wards as panchayat areas,” said John Lobo of the Tenants Association of Camarcasanacho
Bundh.
Besides submitting the letter to the Panchayat Minister, the tenant association and the residents have also forwarded the petition to the Chief Minister, MLAs of Mapusa and Aldona and the Mapusa Municipal Council.
