BICHOLIM
It should have been an occasion for celebration and festivity at Ganesh Chaturthi, but residents of Sal in Bicholim taluka were seen struggling for water after being hit by acute shortage on Thursday and Friday
According to sources, water could not be supplied to Sal village on account of a technical snag at the Assonora water treatment plant.
Sal Sarpanch Prakash Raut and some locals were struggling to supply water to affected villagers through wells and water tankers, while the PWD supplied water through tankers since the last two days.
Demanding an explanation for the erratic water supply to Sal village, Meghashyam Raut, a local leader from Sal, sought to know how water could be supplied regularly to Bardez areas and not to Sal village, especially when water originates from the Sal river.
“The government is taking Sal residents for granted and is providing uninterrupted water supply to Bardez and Porvorim, but cannot supply the same water to Sal. If we do not get proper water supply within two days, we will agitate,” warned Meghashyam.
Taking serious note of the situation, Bicholim MLA Rajesh Patnekar visited the Assonora water treatment plant to take stock of the situation.
Unhappy over the hardship caused to people during the festive days, Patnekar directed officers concerned to take urgent measures to rectify the problem and regulate the water supply.
Patnekar said he had notified the chief miniter and PWD minister regarding the severity of the issue in Sal village.
According to PWD sources, all three pumps are not working efficiently and the standby pump is under repairs. However, the problems would be rectified and water supply would be normalised by Saturday, sources added.
