Water supply has been restricted to entire Bardez taluka and parts of Bicholim taluka from Friday evening till Sunday, on account of a fault in the transformer connecting the 30 MLD water plant at the Assonora water treatment plant.
The power transformer which connects the 30 MLD water plant at the Assonora water treatment plant malfunctioned on Friday evening.
As this transformer could not be repaired, a new transformer was being installed by the water resources department on Saturday and after testing the transformer till late evening, this power transformer was connected to the plant.
As a result, water treatment at the Assonora plant came to a standstill and water supply was affected in some parts of Bardez taluka from Friday evening.
On Saturday morning, residents in Mapusa city and many parts of the taluka did not receive water and several residents began contacting the water supply department. A public notice was later issued stating that there would be restricted water supply on Saturday and Sunday.
However, while the issue with the power transformer at the Assonora water treatment plant has led to to restricted water supply since Friday evening, residents have been facing water shortage sinnce the last eight days in areas like Chicali-Colvale, Ghateshwar Nagar in Mapusa. Residents in Camurlim have been complaining of turbid water.
When contacted, Assonora Water Treatment Plant Assistant Engineer Dilip Naik confirmed that the transformer at the Assonora water treatment plant had been damaged.
“Therefore, restricted water is being supplied from the project and a new transformer has been installed in place of the damaged transformer on Saturday evening. Normal water supply will resume from Monday,” said Naik.
