MARGAO
Margao Municipal Council councillor Mahesh Amonkar on Tuesday demanded that those who had taken money from the poor people on the promise of allotting them plots at Sirvodem should return it immediately.
The MMC councillor has threatened to go on a hunger strike at the MMC building in the event the money taken from the poor people is not returned forthwith.
Addressing the media in the presence of a group of people who have been waiting for the return of their money ever since a proposal was mooted to set up a kabrastan on the plots at Sirvodem, Amonkar said the issue is not of Kabrastan, but the money of these poor people, who had hopes of getting the plots.
“These people had paid Rs two lakh to the developers with the hope of getting the plots, but in vain. While these people had paid money for the plots, the Margao Municipal Council had later resolved to set up a kabrastan on the land. Since then, these poor people have neither got the promised plots nor the their money,” he lamented.
The MMC councillor said the Margao Municipal Council had acquired the land at Sonsodo to set up the kabrastan around 10 years ago. “Instead of setting up the burial grounds at Sonsodo, the MMC conveniently shifted the kabrastan to Sirvodem on the plots where the poor people had paid the money. To date, these poor people have neither received the plots nor their money,” he added.
