With the State government setting the ball rolling to shift the cricket stadium to Dhargal-Pernem, the question now is whether the government will revert the land acquired in Tivim for the same purpose to its original owners.
Some farmers have taken the lead by writing to the government to cancel the land acquisition proceedings undertaken by the then government in 2007 and return the land in Tivim to the original owners.
"Since the decision to lease the Tivim land to GCA has long been cancelled, the purpose of acquisition of the said land does not survive," said Dnyaneshwar Vaigankar, one of the farmers owning land in the area.
In a letter to the Director of Sports, Vaigankar and two others have said the government has declared in court that the decision to give the land to GCA has been cancelled and the interest of the owners whose land was acquired would be taken into consideration.
They further said some farmers were cultivating the land and its acquisition had caused immense prejudice, depriving them of income.
"For the last 11 years, the land is without any use as it is not required by the government. It must therefore to be returned to the persons from whom it was acquired," Vaigankar appealed.
In 2007, the State government through the department of sports had acquired property of around 1.30 lakh sq mt in Tivim for the purpose of construction of an international standard cricket stadium. The then government had soon executed a lease agreement with GCA to build a cricket stadium there.
Soon afterwards, Dnyaneshwar Vaigankar along with other villagers filed a writ petition in the High Court for cancellation of the lease with GCA. The petitioners had also made a representation to the government stating that it was not entitled to transfer the land for any project.
"After our representation, the government cancelled the lease with GCA and declared that it will consider the grievances of the owners and return their land. However, till date the government has failed to take any decision on the land," Vaigankar said.
He further said the said land was acquired without considering their objection and no compensation was paid to them.
"The then Congress government under the influence of then minister, Dayanand Narvekar ran roughshod on us and cheated us," Vaigankar alleged adding, "We hope at least the BJP-led government can now give us justice."
