Review panel unacceptable: DSE

Diocesan Society of Education (DSE) has questioned the State government’s move to appoint the academic authority on Medium of Instruction (MoI), even as an entire exercise was earlier carried out by the Manohar Parrikar-led State government by appointing a committee of educationists.

Speaking to The Goan, DSE Secretary Fr Zeferino D’Souza said, “This committee is unacceptable. It appears that the present chief minister is trying to destroy what his predecessor has done. When the entire process was completed and consultations were held at length, why
has this committee been
appointed?”
Stating that initially the erstwhile Congress government took a decision to give grants to the English medium primary schools, he said, “When BJP came to power, another decision was taken to continue the grants. The previous chief minister had appointed a committee of educationists and the decision was taken.”
Further the MoI Bill was tabled in the assembly and then referred to the select committee.
However, he said, “When FORCE leader Savio Lopes went on hunger strike, the CM promised and assured on the floor of the house that they will table and pass the bill. Additionally, 11 MLAs also gave in writing that the bill will be tabled.”
“After all this, was there another committee required? What are the reasons given by this government to form this committee? Have they told the people that they will have another committee, as this decision was earlier taken by following a process of consultation,” he said.
