The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) will implement the revised Social Science II -- Geography and Economics -- textbook for Class X from the upcoming academic year 2024-25 onwards. The textbook had to be revised to correct some factual errors and to upgrade it with the latest ground developments.
The textbook has been revised with an update on Manohar International Airport at Mopa, which commenced its operations from January 2023 and also on certain tributaries. State was following the NCERT textbook.
“We have already revised the textbook and the same will be implemented from the new academic year 2024-25 onwards,” Goa Board chairman Bhagirath Shetye told The Goan.
Shetye admitted that the textbook was not updated as per the ground developments and was also ridden with minor errors, which has now been rectified.
Certain parents had brought to the notice of The Goan that the Social Science II textbook of Class X speaks about Goa having only one International airport at Dabolim while the new one at Mopa is under construction. The parents sounded confused as to whether, if a question is asked pertaining to the international airports in Goa, students should answer as per inaccurate textbook information or as per ground realities.
Responding to the query, the Board Chairman said that students will be provided full marks in case of both the answers- that are as per textbook and also ground reality. “Ground reality is that we have got two airports, so we have to accept that. Also, our textbook says we got one airport, so that is also the correct answer. We have to accept both,” he said.
The parents are of the strong view that the school textbooks need to be revised periodically in order to be up-to-date in information; if not, outdated information will then be imparted to students.
