A scooter rider and his granddaughter were injured in a hit-and-run accident involving a jeep driven by a tourist in Anjuna on Thursday morning.

Anjuna police later arrested the driver, identified as Rakesh Mahanto from Odisha, and seized the vehicle involved in the accident.

The mishap took place at around 7.50 am near Henmil Residency, opposite the Anjuna Police Station. Mahanto was driving a Thar Jeep from Vagator towards Anjuna, while Shyamsundar Simepurushkar was riding a scooter to drop his granddaughter at school.

Police said the Thar Jeep, which was allegedly speeding, was turning from an internal road onto the main road when it collided with the scooter, throwing both riders onto the road. The driver then fled the scene with the vehicle.

The injured man and his granddaughter were treated at the Mapusa District Hospital and later discharged.

Using CCTV footage, Anjuna police traced the jeep, seized it from a location near a restaurant in Anjuna and arrested the driver.

Further investigation is underway.
