Concerns are rising in Mapusa over the increase in criminal activities and the non-functioning CCTV surveillance system.
Residents and business owners feel vulnerable due to the lack of operational cameras in key areas, calling for immediate action to enhance security.
The existing CCTV cameras, installed years ago in Mapusa’s main municipal market, have become defunct due to poor maintenance. Once effective in monitoring and deterring petty crimes, they now leave busy areas unmonitored.
In response, the Mapusa Merchants Association has appealed for the immediate installation of fully-functional surveillance cameras in the market, a vital economic hub.
Merchants report that the absence of security cameras has emboldened criminals and created insecurity among shopkeepers and customers.
“We need the authorities to act quickly to reinstall these cameras so that both merchants and customers feel safe,” said shop owner Gitesh Dangui.
Local traffic police have also emphasised the need for CCTV cameras at key entry and exit points in Mapusa to address rising traffic violations and accidents.
A senior traffic police official stated that surveillance would enhance traffic management and deter illegal activities.
Frustration grows as neighbouring areas like Bicholim have implemented effective CCTV systems.
Residents are questioning why Mapusa, a larger town and commercial centre, has been neglected in security infrastructure.
Local MLA Joshua D’Souza has acknowledged these concerns, confirming that plans are in place to replace existing cameras and expand coverage.
“We have initiated discussions with the relevant departments,” he said. The town now awaits action to restore a sense of safety and security.
