Rivers running just below danger mark in Canacona

Rivers running just below danger mark in Canacona

CANACONA

A number of roads were inundated in low-lying areas following incessant rains in Canacona taluka since late Tuesday evening.

The NH66 at Gulem remained flooded with rainwater gushing over the road at about 100 metres, posing a threat to highway traffic. Many two-wheelers got stranded in the middle of the road, while other motorists crossed over with difficulty.

While the main rivers in the taluka reached the brim and were just below the danger mark, some rivulets at Agonda, Devabhaga and Dumane are overflowing and water entered some homes in the area. Paddy fields along the riverbanks were also inundated.

Some uprooting of trees, and mini-landslides were also reported elsewhere in the taluka.

According to sources, the rivers at Talpona, Galgibaga and Saleri are running just below the danger mark.

“The overnight rains and the overflowing water brought logs and other materials into our fields. Our nursery is again underwater,” informed a farmer at Agonda, who had planted seedlings only two days ago.

The taluka observatory recorded 165mm of rain in Canacona since Tuesday midnight, as the seasonal total crossed 1140.00 mm of rain on Wednesday.
