Mapusa Municipal Council has given the green signal to make the road leading to St Jerome Church as 'no parking', and for hiking the fee for birth and death certificates.
Passing an unanimous resolution to make a 300-metre stretch of the road from Kalangutkar Nursing Home to Institute of Public Assistance as 'no parking', the council decided to disallow any parking on the right side of the road and look into the possibility of reserving the left side of the road for two-wheeler parking.
MMC chairperson, Sandeep Falari, informed that the council had received a missive from the deputy collector to convert the stretch as 'no parking' as per the proposal received from the DySP traffic.
Participating in the discussion, councillor Sanjay Mishal wondered why only the specific road was selected to be converted into no parking.
“There are several roads in Mapusa that need urgent attention and there is a need to convert many more stretches in town as no parking for smooth movement of traffic,” Mishal said.
Ward councillor, Kavita Arlekar requested the council to look into possibility of allowing two-wheelers to be parked on the left side of the road on the stretch.
Terming the proposal as good, councillor Rajsingh Rane reminded the chairperson that the council had sent several proposals to the traffic police to streamline the vehicular traffic in town but nothing came of it.
Placing the proposal before the council to hike the fee for dispensation of birth and death certificates, the chairperson informed the council that many people from surrounding villages flocked to the Mapusa Council because the rate for the certificates was very low.
“MMC charges only Rs 15 per certificate while several other councils charged minimum Rs 25 per certificate,” he said.
The council then unanimously passed a resolution to increase the fee for birth and death certificate to Rs 25 per certificate.
The council also unanimously passed a resolution to give a go-ahead to a proposal by BSNL to provide wi-fi service in the municipal market and municipal building.
The total cost for installing the wi-fi service as per the BSNL’s quotation will work at around Rs 9 lakh, the chairperson informed the council.
The council also decided to decentralise the powers of Chief Officer to other subordinate officers in the council.
