CANACONA

Claiming that road safety awareness is applicable to motorists and pedestrians alike, Canacona MLA Isidore Fernandes on Friday said he refuses to entertain calls from his constituents involved in traffic violations.

He was addressing a gathering on the occasion of Road Safety Week, conducted by the Lions of Canacona in association with Canacona Police Traffic Cell at Chaudi on Friday.

“Road safety violations affect everyone, including pedestrians and hence, enforcement of traffic discipline should be enforced in the right direction,”

“The Traffic Police Cell in Canacona is doing exactly this, but people sometimes are willing to compromise on traffic safety.”

“I have refused to entertain calls from my constituents to request the Traffic Cell not to penalise them when they are caught for traffic violations like over-speeding, driving without helmets and without seat belts, etc. This is because, we should first learn to observe road discipline for our better and safer tomorrow,” Fernandes added.

During the awareness drive at Chaudi, Fernandes, CMC Chairperson Chaya Komarpant and the Lions Club members handed over appreciation notes and flower to those found following traffic rules like wearing a helmet, seat belt, maintaining speed limit, etc.

Motorists found without helmets, seat belts and exceeding speed limits in the town were stopped and handed over pamphlets regarding traffic rules and regulations.

A resource person, Adrian Torres, gave a presentation on road safety and traffic discipline to students of Shri Mallikarjun College at Delem. Canacona Traffic Police PSI Gautam Salunke also delivered a traffic and road safety sensitization talk to college students in the college auditorium.

Those present at the function included Canacona Councillor Hemant Naik Gaunkar, Lions District Region Chairperson Rajani Raikar, Zone Chairperson Gloria Fernandes, District Chairperson (Road Safety) Kiran Naik, Canacona Lions President Bernard Fernandes, Secretary Manual Martins, Treasurer Valerian Viegas, other Lions Club members and residents.
