A day after the local Congress staged a protest over the poor condition of a key road leading into the beach belt, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo on Thursday assured residents that the government’s immediate priority is to upgrade road infrastructure and improve civic amenities across the constituency.

Lobo chaired a review meeting at the Calangute panchayat office with officials from the Electricity Department, PWD (roads and water supply), Police Department and the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation (GSIDC). Calangute Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira was also present.

The meeting focused on assessing ongoing works and fast-tracking pending projects that have been repeatedly flagged by locals and stakeholders in the tourism-driven village.

According to Lobo, the discussion covered a range of interventions currently underway in Calangute, including the long-pending refurbishment of Tito’s Lane, improvement of internal village roads, and upgrades to the Poriat football ground, which has been identified for community-level sports development.

Officials also reviewed beautification plans and works related to critical infrastructure such as the sewage pipeline network, laying of new water pipelines, and hotmixing of several internal road stretches to enhance connectivity and visitor safety.

“Our focus remains on better roads, better facilities and a better quality of life for the people of Calangute,” Lobo said, adding that the village – one of Goa’s most visited tourist hubs – needs coordinated departmental action to ensure long-term improvements.

While welcoming the assurances, locals have stressed that timely execution is essential, especially with heavy tourist inflow expected in the coming season. Lobo said departments have been instructed to expedite work and resolve bottlenecks to ensure residents do not face prolonged inconvenience.
