In what could be termed as a big relief for commuters from Karnataka and Goa, the Belagavi Public Works Department (PWD) has taken up the recarpeting of the dilapidated Belagavi-Goa road via Chorla.
The recarpeting will be taken up in a matter of couple of days, giving much-needed comfort to commuters, especially during the peak season time and when the Winter Session of the Karnataka State Legislature is on the anvil.
To begin with, the contractor has commenced work on an alternative route near the Kusmalli Bridge over the Malaprabha River to facilitate the completion of the long-pending bridge structure.
The diversion was activated today to enable smoother movement of vehicles while construction progresses. The work on the newly constructed bridge had remained incomplete owing to the early onset of monsoon in May this year, due to which the embankments in the either side of the bridge could not be completed causing huge inconvenience to the movement of heavy vehicles.
In addition to completing the incomplete bridge, the department will also repair several newly constructed yet damaged stretches along the Belagavi–Goa road via Chorla. According to PWD Executive Engineer Rajendra, teams are mobilised on-site to ensure faster execution of the work.
It may be recalled that the entire stretch of about 46 kms from Peeranwadi to Chorla was reconstructed.
