PORVORIM
Describing garbage as a man-made crisis, Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) Managing Director Sanjit Rodrigues has stated that effective garbage management is the responsibility of all citizens.
Addressing a function by the Pilerne-Marra panchayat to create awareness about segregation of garbage and drug menace, Rodrigues said the panchayats, while issuing construction licenses to builders, should lay accondition that the builder should construct a Composting Station in the building premises.
“It should also be made mandatory for occupants of buildings to segregate garbage at home and should not dump garbage by the roadside,” he added.
“If panchayats do their work sincerely, then half of the problems relating to garbage will be solved, since the State government spends crores of rupees on collection of garbage strewn by the roadside.”
He informed the gathering that as per the Goa Non-Biodegradable Garbage Control Act, fines ranging between Rs 200 and 5,000 and imprisonment of 1 month can be imposed on house owner, while fines ranging between Rs 2,000 and Rs 25,000 and imprisonment of 6 months can be imposed on commercial establishments for non-segregation and dumping of waste on the roads.
Speaking on the drugs menace, Porvorim Police Sub Inspector Dinesh Gadekar appealed to parents to keep a vigil on activities of their children and advised them to be prudent while giving them money. “If residents find some suspicious activities in their locality, they should inform the police,” PSI Gadekar, adding that police have also begun arresting people found throwing garbage by the roadside.
Pilerne Sarpanch Amarnath Govekar, ZP member Rupesh Naik, Karishma Harmalkar and Vijay Shetti also spoke on the occasion.
