Anjuna Police have registered a case of alleged cheating, criminal breach of trust and criminal intimidation against an Assagao resident following a complaint by a Haryana-based businessman who claimed he was duped of Rs 1.95 crore in a proposed land transaction at Anjuna.
According to police, the complaint was filed by Himanshu Gaba, a resident of Faridabad, Haryana. Based on his complaint, Anjuna Police registered a case under Sections 318(4), 316(2) and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
Police said the accused, Gopaljee Anand of Assagao, allegedly induced the complainant to invest Rs 1.95 crore from September 2022 onwards for the proposed purchase of a 50 per cent share in a 1,028-square metre property known as Bandir Vadda, forming part of Survey No 392/22 (part) at Anjuna.
The complainant alleged that the accused represented that he possessed ownership and transferable rights over the property. However, it was later discovered that the accused allegedly had no direct ownership rights over the land.
Police said that despite receiving the money, the accused allegedly failed to execute the agreed transfer of the property, concealed material facts relating to ownership and title disputes, and continued to retain the complainant's money.
The complaint further alleged that the accused threatened the complainant when he approached the original owners of the property regarding the transaction. The alleged acts caused the complainant a wrongful loss of Rs 1.95 crore, police said.
No arrests have been made so far. Anjuna police is investigating further.
