RTO asked to take it easy on enforcement of PUC checks

PANAJI
Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho has asked enforcement authorities in the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and also the police to go slow on the implementation of checking and fining vehicle users on violations of the Pollution Under Control (PUC) certificate requirement for their vehicles.

On Monday, a day after Godinho was allocated the transport portfolio again, he held a meeting with officials of the RTO and also traffic police, where he issued the instructions.

He asked the officials to be “practical and humane” in implementing the new, stringent rules of the Motor Vehicles Act, and to give relaxation to parents dropping their children to schools on two-wheelers.

He told the media after the meeting that he has asked the officials to be humane in implementing the amended Motor Vehicle Act.  Godinho also said the State government will write to the Centre with a request to extend the validity of the PCU certificates from six months to one year.

He argued that since Goa has only a few PUC centres, it is not enough to conduct tests and issue certificates.

“There are not enough PUC centres in the State. The fine for not having a valid PUC certificate is a whopping Rs 10,000,” Godinho said.

Meanwhile, Godinho said the transport authorities will introduce high-resolution cameras in the State to reduce the dependence on manual policing of traffic and issuance of challans to cut off corruption.
