Rurban Mission: Over Rs 5 cr in kitty, but not a single project on track

MARGAO: Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ambitious Rurban Mission to transform rural areas into economically, socially and physically sustainable spaces have hit a big block in Goa.
While the state government had zeroed in on Quepem to implement the scheme in the cluster of
villages in the taluka, not a single project has seen light of the day till date. Funds, reportedly running to the tune of Rs 5-6 crore, dispatched to the state to implement the Rurban scheme in Goa are lying in the state treasury for want of implementation of the scheme.
That's not all. Since the transfer of then DRDA Director Laura Britto, not a single meeting of the
stakeholder and line department officials has taken place for close to a year now. And, the scheme
seemed totally forgotten with not a single meeting being held of the stake holders after the March 11
Assembly election results.
When the media asked RDA Director VN Shetye to shed light on the fate of the Rurban Mission in
Goa, with not a single scheme being implemented in Quepem block, he said moves are on to revive
the scheme by handing over the implementation role to the South Goa district Collector, Anjali
Sherawat. In fact, Shetye told The Goan after he would put up a note for the government to consider appointing the South Goa district Collector as the implementing agency for the Rurban scheme. "We have had preparatory meetings with the district Collector, who has showed her willingness to implement the Rurban mission in the state given her experience in implementing the scheme at her place of earlier posting", Shetye added.
Replying to a question, he said that Goa has received funds to the tune of Rs 5-6 crore under the Rurban Scheme and these funds will be spent after the projects are designed by the College of Architecture and approved by the government agencies.
In the past, the DRDA had taken the initiative to implement Rurban Mission in Xeldem cluster coming under Quepem taluka. A host of meetings with the line departments too were held by then DRDA office Laura Britto, but the scheme hit the block after her transfer and post Assembly election.
