Farmers affected by the Mopa airport link road on Sunday blocked the road at Mopa setting a 24-hour deadline to authorities to act on their demand to stop work on the project immediately.

Farmers from Varkhand, Nagzar, Tulaskarwadi, Dhargal and surrounding areas agitating under the banner of Dhargal Mopa Shetkari Sangharsh Samiti demanded that the work of the link road be stopped immediately in view of the show cause and stop work order issued by the panchayat.

Warning that the agitation will be intensified in days to come, farmers have set a 24-hour deadline to stop the work while also threatening to move the National Green Tribunal.

They alleged that despite the panchayat’s stay order notice, the work of link road was still going on.

Farmers also condemned the high-handed action of land acquisition officer Chandrakant Shetkar.

According to reports, Sanjay Tulaskar, Sarpanch of Nagzar Panchayat had issued a stop work order and had asked authorities to submit documents related to the project.

Deputy Collector Rajesh Azgaonkar, meanwhile rushed to the spot and held discussions with the protesting farmers. He asked them to give their demands in writing.

The farmers later decided to call off their protest on a condition that administration would act within 24 hours and stop the work of link road.
