In a second arrival of the season in Canacona, a sea turtle laid 89 eggs in the wee hours of Wednesday at Agonda beach.
The turtle eggs were however shifted to Galgibaga Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, as no Turtle Rehabilitation Centre is set up at Agonda as per the Policy of the recently formed South Goa Marine Range to have a solo rehabilitation centre at Galgibaga for better supervision and maintenance.
According to Forest sources, a turtle arrived on Agonda beach, in the wee hours of Wednesday and laid 89 eggs in a pit excavated by the flapper before disappearing into the sea.
The Forest engaged staff then recovered all 89 eggs from the pit which were replanted into a pit at Galgibaga Turtle Nesting Site.
According to South-Goa Marine Range incharge RFO Vivek Gaonkar at its Headquarters at Galgibaga, the Forest Department has decided to operate a single Turtle Rehabilitation Centre at Galgibaga in Canacona to facilitate proper care and supervision of the Marine endangered species till its procreation and release of the baby Olive Ridleys into the sea.
Presently Galgibaga has two pits catering to a total of 182 turtle eggs.
The first one (Pit) was secured after shifting 93 eggs, which a sea turtle laid into a pit at Talpona coast on December 18.
According to sources, a mother turtle arrived on Talpona coast (neighbouring Galgibaga), at slightly about dusk time (6.30 pm), and some of the Forest engaged personnel on a round to the area noticed the arriving mother turtle and laying eggs in a pit dug by its flappers. Later, the Forest engaged staff retrieved the eggs and replanted them in a special pit dug by them at Galgibaga Turtle Rehabilitation Centre.
"As of now, we have decided to operate only one Turtle Nesting Site at Galgibaga for better supervision and care," informed RFO Vivek Gaonkar, and denied any other reason for not commencing the traditionally operated Turtle Rehabilitation Centre at Agonda.
