According to sources at the jail, the incident occurred at about 9 pm after which about 150 inmates were evacuated from rest of the cells and were shifted to the main office and a hall on the ground floor. Sources informed efforts were on to shift about 70 inmates to Colvale jail because of space constraints. After getting the information, Mormugao DySP Sucheeta Dessai, Mormugao PI Kapil Nayak and Assistant Superintendent of Sada Sub-jail Bhanudas Pednekar rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation and supervise the movement of the inmates. A strong police force from the IRB was stationed at the jail to avoid any inmates from taking undue advantage of the situation. Sources claimed that as the construction was old, there was seepage of rainwater in the cell due to the incessant rains. “The matter was brought to the notice of the jail officials, who failed to carry out necessary repairs,” informed a source. The source added that seepage of rainwater was a perennial problem during the rains, due to which the steel of the slab corroded and on Sunday the cemented portion of the slab finally gave way. “The inmates in the cell were about to go to bed when the portion of the slab collapsed. Luckily, no one was hurt in the incident,” said the source.
