The Government Primary School at Saipem village in Candolim was kept closed on Wednesday as a precautionary measure, following the inferno at the warehouse of the Berger Becker company in Pilerne Industrial Estate on Tuesday evening.
Sarpanch Fermino Fernandes said residents and tourists in Saipem also shifted to safer areas for the night.
"We went with our family to a relative’s house in Sequerim. This was done as a precautionary measure to avoid any emergency situation at night. The local panch came home to make us aware of the fire and its seriousness, so most people from our village shifted elsewhere. We returning home on Wednesday morning,” said a resident Flora Colaco.
EVALUATING LOSSES
Managing Director of Berger Becker Coatings Rajesh Mehrotra said the exact estimate of the losses are yet to be ascertained.
“At present, the debris is being removed. The exact estimate of losses is is yet to be evaluated. yet. The insurance officers have arrived and we will be having a meeting with them, to decide the future course of action,” said Mehrotra.
POWER RESTORED
GIDC Chairperson Aleixo Reginald Lourenco said the electricity supply which was switched off in the industrial estate as a precautionary measure was restored on Tuesday night.
“The fire was virtually extinguished by about 6.30 am on Wednesday. The fire services and administrative systems worked hard to bring the fire under control. We are lucky there were no casualties,” said Lourenco.
