Officials in the know, however, said that it will take a long time to stabilise the situation with hundreds of applications presently pending in the office of the Sub Registrar since the last few months.
With the government deputing two additional staff to the Salcete Sub Registrar’s office, the manpower strength of the office has gone up to six, sources said, However, the total strength of the office was earlier put at 12 before the Department of Planning and Statistics withdrew its staff late last year.
On an average, the Salcete Sub Registrar office receives around 100 applications a day for birth certificates. However, unlike the municipal and panchayat bodies, where the births and deaths sections are computerised and where certificates are available in a day or two, it take many days for applicants to obtain a copy of their birth certificate at the Sub Registrar’s office.
“The deployment of additional two staff members will certainly go a long way to tide over the manpower shortage at the births and deaths section of the Sub Registrar,” an official in the know told
The Goan.
He, however, hastened to add that it will certainly take some time before the situation returns to normal. “Of the total six employees, one staffer is deputed to attend the court proceedings. The remaining five employees are engaged in processing the applications and issuing the birth certificates,” the official remarked.
Functioning of the births and deaths section in the Salcete Sub Registrar’s office had come to a near halt after the Department of Planning and Statistics withdrew its staff from the office late last year. The office was left with just 3-4 employees to man the section, resulting in huge delays in issuance of
birth certificates.
Representations and pleas made by the residents to the previous Laxmikant Parsekar government had fallen on deaf ears with both the Chief Minister, who was holding the Department of Planning and Statistics and his Deputy Francis D’Souza, presiding over the Law Department unable to resolve the
manpower imbroglio.
