The road underpasses in Salcete near the Konkan railway tracks were the first to suffer from heavy pre-monsoon rains over the last two days.
Both the Seraulim and Comba subways were flooded after heavy downpours. The Seraulim subway was closed to traffic, while vehicles managed to pass through the Comba subway to cross the railway tracks.
The Seraulim subway usually stays closed during the monsoon and after because of ongoing drainage problems that have not been fixed yet. Even when it is opened after the monsoon, waterlogging is very common there.
The Comba subway also floods and becomes unusable during heavy rain or when the nearby Sal river flows back during high tides.
The Comba subway has been in use for over 15 years, but the long-promised flyover at the Comba railway crossing is still not built.
