Saligao Congress workers meeting held in Guirim

Cong vows to put past behind, asks electorate to rally behind party

Making a fervent appeal to the people to give Congress the mandate in the 2017 assembly elections, General Secretary, Agnel Fernandes assured that the party has learnt its lesson and will not make the same mistakes again.

“We will not repeat the mistakes of the past. Goans have made us realize our folly in the 2012 polls. The past is behind us,” Fernandes said.

The Congress general secretary was addressing a gathering of Saligao Congress workers' meeting on late Wednesday evening at Hotel Green Park in Guirim in the presence of party spokesman, Yatish Naik and Tulio de Souza.

Fernandes further said Congress deserved to lose in 2012 as corruption had assumed huge proportion.

“The people overthrew our government and gave BJP a chance. But what has BJP done? The party which promised zero tolerance to corruption has taken corruption to another level. Corruption has increased manifold after BJP came to power,” he said.

With a reference to the Goa Forward Party, he said some people wanted to align with Congress but the leaders mentoring the party cannot come to terms on several issues dodging the State.

“One leader wants Marathi as the State language while another roots for Konkani. Similarly, one wants casinos out while another wants casinos to stay put,” Fernandes observed.

He said AICC General Secretary and Goa desk in-charge, Digvijay Singh has made it very clear that Congress will contest all 40 seats in the State.

Congress spokesman, Yatish Naik said people were fed up with the BJP government's misrule and Congress will make a comeback in the ensuing elections.

“2017 will be Congress' election and we should all work towards it,” Naik said urging the gathering to work for the party's victory.

Referring to the rise in unemployment, he said the BJP-led government has failed on all fronts and was unsuccessful to provide basic governance in the State.

Tulio de Souza said people of Saligao were fed up with the present MLA who has failed to provide jobs to youth.

“Let's rally behind the Congress. In this election, the fight will be between the Congress and BJP. So don't waste your vote on other smaller parties,” he said.

Saligao Congress Block President, Celine D`Souza and former ZP Nita Kandolkar were also present.
