Demanding that every taluka should treat its own garbage treatment facilities, Saligao MLA Kedar Naik on Tuesday said the Saligao waste management plant should not be treated as a dumping ground for the garbage of entire Goa.

He has warned that residents of Saligao, Pilerne and Calangute will be forced to stop trucks carrying garbage from other talukas from entering the Saligao garbage plant, if authorities do not take action to control and stop the foul odour emanating from the treatment plant within the next 10 days.

Naik was speaking to media persons after he along with representatives of the Saligao and Pilerne panchayats met the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) Managing Director Ankit Yadav to voice their unhappiness over the foul smell from the garbage treatment plant in Saligao.

“The Saligao plant was supposed to treat garbage from Bardez and coastal areas. But it has been observed that the garbage from Ponda and Margao areas are also sent here. This is not acceptable. Every taluka should treat its own garbage. The Saligao plant should not be treated as a dumping ground for the garbage of entire Goa,” said Naik.

“Residents of Saligao, Pilerne and Calangute had given consent for the plant on the assurance that garbage from coastal and nearby areas would be treated in this plant. The capacity of the Saligao treatment plant was increased to 300 tonnes to treat garbage of Bardez and coastal area and not of entire Goa.”

“If the permanent solution is not arrived at within next 10 days then the residents will be forced to stop the trucks carrying garbage from other talukas entering the garbage plant .Now the onus lies on the Goa waste Management corporation to solve the issue of foul smell said Naik.

Naik also submitted a memorandum to Yadav in the presence of Pilerne-Marra Sarpanch Reshma Bandodkar, Dy Sarpanch Ajay Govekar, Saligao Sarpanch Lucas Remidios and Zilla Panchayat member Sandeep Bandodkar.

Later speaking to media persons, Naik said the foul smell emanating from the garbage treatment plant is unbearable and has caused misery to the lives of residents in nearby areas.

“On behalf of residents of Pilerne and Saligao, I submitted a memorandum to the GWMC to control the foul odour.
