Salvador do Mundo Sarpanch Sandeep Salgaonkar and Deputy Sarpanch Reena Fernandes submitted their resignations to the Director of Panchayats on Thursday, a day ahead of the meeting to discuss the no-confidence motion against them.
Five of the nine panchas, Bhagwant Naik, Suvarnalata Parsekar, Vijay Chodankar, Antonio Fernandes and Roshni Sawaikar had moved a no-confidence motion against the sarpanch and deputy sarpanch on June 25, accusing them of allowing illegal constructions and for failing to take panch members into confidence while taking decisions on development issues.
The Block Development Officer had convened a meeting in the Salvador do Mundo panchayat on Friday to discuss about the no-confidence motion.
Anticipating that the no-confidence motion against them would be passed and apparently to avoid the embarrassment, Sandeep Salgaonkar and Reema Fernandes submitted resignations to their respective posts to the Directorate of Panchayats on Thursday.
Later addressing a news conference in Porvorim, Sandeep Salgaonkar and Reena Fernandes refuted the allegations against them by the five members of the panchayat.
“I worked honestly for the development of the village. The work of Panchayat Ghar and the multipurpose sports complex were completed during my tenure. Roads have been hotmixed and garbage collection is going on smoothly, which indicates I have performed my duties properly,” said Salgaonkar.
“The aggrieved members should have approached me and voiced their grievances and I would have tried to resolve them to their satisfaction with the assistance of MLA Rohan Khaunte.”
“It is crystal clear that the aggrieved members have joined BJP for their selfish interest and not in the interest of development of the village,” said Salgaonkar.
