Sancoale-based Zuari Agro Chemicals Limited (ZACL) held an interactive meeting with farmers of Sancoale to discuss modalities of bringing paddy fields under cultivation.
Company officials, Water Resources Department representatives, Panch Rosalina Moniz and more than a 100 farmers attended the meeting.
The meeting which was organised at the behest of Sancoale panchayat saw the farmers and the company officials discuss the problems faced in the cultivation of paddy fields.
The company was requested to provide a tractor, repair the water channels in order to maintain the flow of water needed for cultivation and also make available manure in the village.
Sancoale Sarpanch Ramakant Borkar appealed to the company to help farmers get back to cultivation.
Later, Borkar told The Goan that the company had agreed to most of the demands.
“I cautioned the villagers not to sell their land in return for flats and shops. In the years to come, land and paddy fields will be in high demand and the returns from cultivation will be much more lucrative than the flats and shops,” Borkar said.
Some villagers also reminded the company that assurances, especially pertaining to jobs, that they had given at the time of setting the company were ignored. At this stage, the sarpanch intervened saying that the meeting was meant only to discuss the farmers' issues and appealed to them to stick to the meeting agenda.
