While many a Vanamahotsava festival witnesses distribution of saplings or plantation drives, Sancoale Sarpanch Girish Pillai set a new example by clearing a dark spot and using the area for planting saplings during the Vanamahotsava festival at Sancoale on Sunday.

Pillai speaking to reporters said that while he wanted to plant trees, he also wanted to clear a dark spot and use the area, so that a strong message is sent to the villagers to use open areas to plant trees instead of dumping garbage.

"We have started the plantation drive from an area nearUmiya Habitat because this used to be a dark spot where people used to dump garbage and so we cleared the area and planted saplings here so that garbage can be stopped being dumped here. The people of the building are now so happy that they have taken the responsibility of maintaining and taking care of these plants so that people can stop dumping garbage here and prevent this area from becoming a dark spot again. The residents have also agreed to water these plants daily, " said Pillai.

" We have seen how open spaces along roadsides are being used by people to throw their garbage and this only leads to creating health hazards and makes the area an eyesore for everyone. People must instead use the same open areas to plant trees so that the place becomes greener and we also have a good environment. We at the panchayat also have plans to plant around 1,000 saplings across all wards and we will try and make our village more beautiful, clean and healthy by planting saplings across the entire village " said Pillai.
