Rejecting the State government’s draft Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) prepared by the Chennai-based National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management (NCSCM), the Sancoale Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) has decided to prepare a fresh draft CZMP for the village.
The decision was taken during a BMC meeting in the Sancoale panchayat office on Wednesday. Various stakeholders, including local fishing and farming communities, panch members and others, attended the meeting chaired by BMC Chairperson Navin Jha.
“The draft CZMP plan prepared by NCSCM has been rejected by villagers because the agency involved not only failed to do any ground work but even failed to take any suggestions or consultation from the local stakeholders,” Jha told reporters after the BMC meeting.
“Since participation of villagers was necessary, Sancoale BMC decided to step in and decided to set up a committee comprising various stakeholders and importantly, people from fishing and farming communities, among others.”
“We had some environmental experts with us and they helped in preparing an accurate plan as the draft CZMP which had been sent to Sancoale Panchayat was full or errors,” he added.
Jha also informed that once the Sancoale BMC is ready with a fresh CZMP, it would be sent for incorporation into the state CZMP.
