Sanguem Municipal Council (SMC) Chairperson Quiroz Cruz said the council has plans to organise the weekly baazar on Saturday instead of Wednesday, as this would give a boost to commercial activities, resulting in revenue generation for the council.
Majority of the shops in SMC administrative building are lying idle, as there are no takers for them, while the special provision made for vegetable and fish vendors below the municipal administrative building has become a home for stray dogs and stray cattle and rodents.
Speaking to The Goan, Chairperson Cruz said that a few months back the vegetable and fish vendors were moved to the place below the municipal administrative building. “But after about three days, the vendors complained that there was poor response to their business and they are facing losses. Vendors chose to sit in a street-vendor shed next to the government administrative building at Sanguem.”
“We plan to shift all the vegetable, fish, meat and other vendors to a new place once the second phase of the market complex is completed. I have put forward a proposal before the council during the council meeting to shift the baazar day from Wednesday to Saturday,” said Cruz.
“The Curchorem market day is on Sunday and many vendors from Belagavi and Karwar area come for business at Curchorem. If we invite these vendors to Sanguem town on Saturday, then people from interior areas of Sanguem taluka will get an opportunity to buy household goods in Sanguem,” Cruz added.
SMC Chief Officer Pramod Dessai said that in the old administrative building, rates were imposed as per the council decision which was much less as compared to existing rent rates in the new administrative building which are as per the PWD rates, which is Rs 16,000 per month.
But many shop owners demanded to fix the rate at Rs 100 per sq mtr, as there is not much commercial activities taking place in Sanguem.
