Villagers from Sanguem unanimously demanded total scrapping of eco sensitive zone in Sanguem taluka and asked the government take immediate action failing which they would be compelled to lead an agitation.
At a special meeting attended by over 2000 at Wadem Colony, residents however, agreed to wait for 10-15 days before taking a call on their future course of action as Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant had assured to look into the issue.
Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar said he had led a delegation to the CM where he was assured of a meeting with all department heads concerning the eco sensitive zone and study the effects it would have on villagers and their farms lands. He also said CM had agreed to meet the villagers after getting all relevant info.
Gaonkar however, urged the villagers to remain united irrespective of their political affiliations, this being a major issue concerning the livelihood and living of people in remote areas.
Agreeing that the notification would have a bearing on development aspect and the livelihood of the people even those having vast ancestral lands, Gaonkar urged the villagers to come out in large numbers whenever necessary in getting the issue resolved.
Abhijit Dessai who had been in the forefront since the notification came into effect, demanded urgent scrapping of the notification. “Not only infrastructure development of the village, but the very living of the people in the villages will be made difficult”, he said.
Adv Anand Gaonkar spoke on the legal aspect of the eco sensitive zone and the restrictions under the prevailing law that would be imposed under the notification.
Later, the villagers unanimously passed a resolution by raising hands to oppose the notification tooth and nail.
Anil Kakodkar welcomed the gathering while Chandan Unandkar proposed the vote of thanks.
