In a major development intended to address the concerns of Colva residents that discharge of treated sewage water into the Arabian Sea would spell doom for tourism, the Sewerage & Infrastructure Development Corporation of Goa has now proposed to discharge the treated sewage from the 7.5 MLD proposed Colva sewage treatment plant into the River Sal.
Colva residents along with local MLA Churchill Alemao, however, stuck to their guns, strongly demanding relocation of the STP from the midst of intense tourism activity to a remote area, away from the iconic beach in the interest of tourism and the local populace.
At a power point presentation arranged by the Corporation for the benefit of the villagers and the Panchayat members, Corporation officials pointed out that the treated water from the STP shall be disposed off into the river Sal to maintain e-flow in the river in order to have self-cleaning of the river. The officials pointed out that since the presence velocity of flow in the river is very low, it has been proposed to discharge the treated water from STP into the river so that water will flow with
higher velocity.
