A storage room at the Hindu crematorium in Mirabag-Sanvordem was gutted in the wee hours of Thursday.
Locals noticed the flames and brought it to the notice of the Panchayat Member Sanjay Naik, who promptly alerted the Curchorem fire station.
A fire brigade went to the site and extinguished the fire before it could spread to other areas.
The items in the room which were gutted in the fire included firewood and other implements.
Naik has raised doubts regarding the cause of the fire and claimed the structure may have been deliberately set ablaze by miscreants.
“The room in question is located inside the premises and does not have an electricity connection nor is there any dried grass around it, making it unlikely for the fire to have started on its own. This is the first time that such an incident has taken place in the village,” said Naik, who estimated the loss of property at about Rs 3 lakh. He added that an investigation into the cause of the fire is being conducted by Curchorem police.
