Sao Joao festivities ended in a tragedy at Dongorim-Navelim on Friday noon after a 19-year-old student died due to drowning in a well.
Margao police informed that Ashish Rodrigues, a resident of Navelim along with others were celebrating Sao Joao festivities by jumping in the well. Margao police station in-charge, PI Sachin Narvekar informed that young Ashish died by drowning when he had jumped into the well as part of the festivities. The body was fished out by Margao fire brigade personnel after a half-hour long operation.
Fire officer Gill D’Sa informed that the fire brigade had received a call at around 2.45 pm informing that a youth had drowned in a well at Navelim. “The rescue team was immediately dispatched to Navelim. Since the well turned out deep, we had sent a message to the Curchorem fire station requisitioning for the underwater cameras. But, before the cameras could reach, our firemen retrieved the body with the help of a hook and ladder,” Gill said.
