Morjim Sarpanch Pawan Morje and local Panch Vilas Morje conducted an inspection at the beach in Vitthaldas Wada, Morjim, following complaints that bags containing waste had been dumped at the beach.

A hotel in the area has also been accused of discharging sewage water into a water body which leads to the sea.

Pawan Morje and Vilas Morje voiced displeasure over the dumping of garbage and demanded action by the health department, Goa Stated Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) and other relevant departments.

Speaking to media persons, Morjim Sarpanch Pawan Morje alleged that a hotel has been construction in violation of laws.

“The panchayat had already issued a demolition notice to party concerned but the directorate of panchayats had granted a stay.

“Such structures are being constructed in violation of the CRZ rules and we have received many complaints from residents. Authorities should inspect this hotel and inform the public as to how it was given permission,” said the sarpanch.

“The hotel is dumping waste and is discharging sewage into a water body which leads to the sea. This contaminated water enters the sea. Are we expected to consume fish which is exposed to this waste?”

Local Panch Vilas Morje said officials from the GSPCB, health department and other departments concerned should take action on discharge of waste and sewage water into the sea.

Locals have complained that a growing number of outsiders are building large structures close to the beach in violation of CRZ rules, but no action is taken against them.

“It is only when locals build a house or a small room, authorities come rushing to the site and begin the demolition process,” said a resident.
