With the seat of Margao Municipal Chairperson fallen vacant once again coupled with the fact that the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) is yet to notify polls for the vacant post, MMC vice-chairperson Deepali Sawal has assumed office as the acting Chairperson of the civic body.
This is the second time in less than a month that Deepali Sawal has assumed office as the MMC acting Chairperson, the first time being when chairperson Lyndon Pereira quit office after completing 15 months in office.
Monday saw Deepali entering the Chairperson’s chamber to take charge following the ouster of Ganashyam Shirodkar Friday last. Though Ganashyam had put in his papers from the post, the 15 BJP-backed councillors had voted him out of office in a no-trust motion.
Deepal is expected to preside over the position of Chairperson till the vacant post is filled up through an election.
Meanwhile, no notification has come from the office of the Director of Municipal Administration to hold the election for the vacant post of Chairperson.
Sources in the DMA office informed that it has time at its disposal to convene a meeting of the Margao Municipal Council to elect the new Chairperson.
GFP, Ganashyam set to file plea in HC
seeking clarity on poll process, ouster

The Goa Forward Party and the ousted Margao Municipal Chairperson Ganashyam Shirodkar is expected to file a writ petition in the High Court in a day or two to seek clarity on the procedure for the election of the Municipal Chairperson and his removal.
Sources in the know informed that the writ petition in this respect has been drafted by a High Court advocate and the same may be filed before the court in a day or two.
Sources in the Goa Forward camp informed that the writ petition will primarily seek clarity on the procedure for the election of the post of MMC Chairperson and his removal. For, while the election of the Municipal Chairperson is conducted via secret ballot, the authorities resort to show of hands to decide the no trust motions.
The Goa Forward and the ex-MMC chairperson are also expected to seek clarity on whether the Presiding Officer enjoys the discretion to hold the election for the post of Chairperson by show of hands.
