MARGAO

A group of postal employees posted at Ponda called on South Goa MP Francisco Sardinha seeking justice after their services were terminated by the Postal department and in their place appointed newly recruited employees from neighbouring Maharashtra.

The employees also called on Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco with a plea to take up their cause as they face the bleak prospect of being axed by the Postal department without any rhyme or reason.

The beleaguered employees demanded the immediate withdrawal of the GDS/Postmen appointed in Goa from outside the State and to reinstate their services in the Post Office.

They have feared that around 50 persons who are working in Post Offices across Goa are facing the axe of termination and unemployment, in near future, with the recruitment of persons who are not Goans.

“We have been working in the Post Office at Ponda and delivering postal articles to the residents of Ponda. Some of us have been working for more than 18 years. We have worked with utmost dedication and without any complaint from the locals as also the officials of the Postal department,” they stated in a memorandum.

They added: “Though we were all working on daily wages for all these years, we were always in hope that we would be taken into service permanently as we have given such a long tenure of our service to the department. But suddenly on September 19, 2022, we were called to the office of the Postmaster at the Ponda Post Office and informed to hand over the official mobiles of the Department. We were also informed that all seven of us are relieved from the job and in our place seven Gramin Dakh Sevak (GDS) have been appointed.”

What’s interesting to note is that they were told that the recruitment of the new employees has been done at the central office.
