Fifteen historical and archaeological sites have been added in recent years to the list of 'protected sites' under the Goa Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1978, including the ruins of the history-rich Convent of Our Lady of Mount Carmel at Chimbel, a landmark linked to Goa's colonial past.
Also included in the list are the Malar Cave in Malar, Tiswadi, and a cave at Siridao, both noted for their archaeological importance. The list also has the remains of the ancient Gopakkapattnam Port at Goa Velha, believed to have played a key role in Goa's maritime history.
Other sites brought under the protected list include the Jacquem Cave at Neturlim in Sanguem, Bawlyache Mol at Pirla in Quepem, and the Pandurang Math and Mukhyapran (Maruti) Math at Balli.
Inclusion of these sites in the protected list safeguards the structures and sites of historical, cultural and archaeological value from encroachment, damage and unregulated development.
Officials said the protected status will ensure better conservation, scientific documentation and long-term preservation of these sites for posterity.
