The Nuvem gram sabha on Sunday has demanded the scrapping of draft CRZ Notification 2018 saying it weakens existing regulations and will open the ecologically sensitive coastline for real estate development, ports, and tourism.
At the gram sabha chaired by Sarpanch Dr Breezy Barretto, member Jose Roque Andrade pointed out that the draft has been prepared without public consultation and only to benefit the industry.
He lamented that though Goa’s CZMP as per the 2011 CRZ notification is still not finalized, yet projects are being cleared in the coastal zones by the government.
“MoEFs draft CRZ notification 2018 will destroy the state’s marine ecology. It has concentrated on norms which will benefit builders to develop beachfront properties rather than protecting the environment. Sustainability and conservation are at stake as the draft excludes fishing communities and their livelihood,” Andrade said.
The garbage issue also figured prominently at the meet. One of the members of the Nuvem Garbage Management Committee Everson Vales explained to the members how garbage is collected and treated in the composite plant in the panchayat compound.
During discussions, Sarpanch Breezy unveiled the garbage collection fee structure for flats, rented rooms and commercial units, which will be applicable to establishments where garbage is collected by the panchayats.
Some members, however, suggested the exercise be made compulsory for all flats in the building, fearing that other flats will add to the garbage problem.
They also demanded to know how garbage disposed on the road side is proposed to be collected and whether any action will be initiated against those who burn the waste and create a health problem.
Indira Rodrigues suggested road safety measures on the NH especially for people who walk on the side of the road, since there is no footpath to walk on.
