Shami Salkar, wife of three-time councillor Krishna (Daji) Salkar on Monday won in Ward 13 with a record number of votes and by the highest margin, but the Salkar panel could win in only two wards of Vasco constituency at the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) polls.

Shami, who polled 1,482 votes, defeated BJP-backed candiadte Shalaka Kambli (232 votes) in a straight fight, winning by a margin of 1,250 votes.

Shami is also reported to have earned the distinction of winning with the biggest margin (1,250 votes) in the State.

Incidentally, that same record had gone to her husband, Daji Salkar, at the MMC elections in 2015, where he had polled the highest votes (1,246) and had won with biggest margin (995) in the State, indicating the popularity of the Salkar couple in their ward.

The other winning candidate in the Salkar panel, Girish Borker, secured 842 votes and defeated former MMC chairperson Manesh Arolkar (695 votes) in Ward 16.

Speaking to reporters, Shami Salkar thanked voters in her ward for placing their faith in her.

“Despite the very grim Covid situation, they came out in large numbers, irrespective of their age groups, and voted for me.”

"Today's result showed that people have appreciated the hard work we put in all these years in the development and upkeep of the city. We pledge that our good work for the city and Vascokars overall will continue with the same zeal and passion," she said.
