Canacona Municipal Council’s (CMC) practice of transferring daily its wet garbage from its vehicles to compactors of Curchorem’s Garbage Treatment Plant (GTP) outside the Dumane GTP has caused a mess along the Canacona-Agonda MDR road at Dumane.

According to municipal sources, two CMC wet garbage trucks transfer its collection into one Garbage Compactor on a day-to-day basis and the load is then shifted to the Curchorem GTP.

“The wet garbage is later segregated at their end in the Curchorem plant. Besides, two of CMC’s trucks carrying dry waste duly covered directly shift the daily collection to the Curchorem GTP without visiting the Dumane GTP,” informed a source at CMC.

Incidentally, the GTP at Dumane belongs to the CMC, but is located in Shristhal village and its effects are borne by residents of Agonda and Khola, who have accused the CMC of contaminating water bodies and paddy fields of Agonda village.

The Dumane GTP is situated barely 100 metres inside forestland across the Canacona-Agonda-Khola road.

“The Dumane area in Shristal is also an upcoming residential area having multiple residential houses and a couple of restaurants,” informed a source.

“Residents there have been complaining against CMC’s practice of transferring daily its wet garbage from its vehicles to compactors of Curchorem’s GTP with the help of a JCB outside the Dumane GTP and across the Canacona-Agonda-Khola road. This daily practice has caused garbage to be strewn in the area.”

Employees of CMC, however, pointed fingers at others for the garbage bags being dumped at the site.

“We cleaned this road only a fortnight ago, but the mess is generated once again and this is due to unscrupulous dumping of wet/dry garbage bags by motorists from Agonda“Khola side. We have even caught a few red-handed and left them after issuing stern warnings,” said an employee at the CMC’s GTP at Dumane.

Incidentally, the CMC has erected a gate at the entrance of the road towards the GTP to prevent unauthorised garbage dumping activity. But with the CMC itself transferring garbage from their vehicles to another vehicle, the entrance now has wet garbage dumps.

“The GTP has no space to carry out the garbage transfer from one vehicle to another, so this activity is being carried out at the entrance of the road, but inside the CMC’s gate”, admitted the CMC source.
