A day after it finalised the Carnival programme, the Tourism Department finalised the programme for the Shigmo celebrations to be held from March 3 to 17. In a statement released by the department, the Tourism Minister said that the festival will involve “a spectacular display of Goan ethnicity and mythology with dancers attired in traditional costumes coming from rural areas of the state.”
“The main highlight would be the elaborately built floats depicting scenes from mythology,” the department said.
Minister of Tourism Manohar “Babu” Ajgaonkar and GTDC chairman, Nilesh Cabral convened a meeting on Wednesday along with other officials, Goa police, traffic police, and municipal bodies to discuss preparations. The officials deliberated on parade schedules, routes and other arrangements. In order to ensure smooth conduct of the parade, suggestions were made that romtamel should start at 4 pm and parades by 6 pm so that all parades conclude by 10 pm. As far as movement of floats to various centres, it was decided that large trolleys carrying tableaux should not be allowed to travel during the day. If required, they could may be ply via Borim Bridge or in the night.
