Goa Police has said the gun which was used in the shooting of two labourers, killing one and seriously injuring the other at Bansai-Curchorem, was reportedly used in the hunting of wild animals.
Quepem DySP Nilesh Rane told reporters that police is yet to ascertain the type of gun used in the crime and added that investigations are in progress to identify those who possessed such a gun in and around Curchorem.
Illegal sand mining activity had taken a gruesome turn when two labourers were shot by unidentified persons at Bansai-Curchorem, when three labourers had gone to the river with a canoe to extract sand in the wee hours of Thursday.
Yusuf Alam (23) was killed, while Mohammad Sahu (33) was seriously injured.
A third labourer who was also present in the canoe at the time of incident, however, escaped unhurt.
Later on Thursday evening, Curchorem police arrested five persons on charges of sand extraction at the same site in Maad-Bansai.
