Sound pollution created by two-wheelers with modified silencers and students without licences riding bikes were some of the issues that came up for discussion during the meeting of road safety and village traffic management in Siolim.
“Motorcycle riders with modified silencers zoom on the MDR 6 road disturbing the peace of the people in the afternoon. It’s a clear case of sound pollution but many times we are helpless,” said Alexyz, the popular cartoonist from Siolim.
The road safety and village traffic management meeting was organized by the Siolim panchayat and coordinated by VDC member, Joaquim Barros, for the students of SFX Higher Secondary School and the residents of Siolim.
A teacher pointed out that some students came to school riding on their two-wheelers without having licences and without wearing helmets.
“In spite of warnings being issued by the principal and teachers, the students continue to bring two-wheelers,” the teacher lamented.
Several locals gave suggestion on installation of proper traffic sign boards and zebra crossing at several places and key junctions on Siolim roads.
Village Child Committee Chairperson Gregory D’Souza stressed on the need to form students’ road safety patrol, enroll traffic wardens and to be part of the Village Panchayat Road Safety and Traffic Management Committee in Siolim.
He also spoke about the use of the traffic sentinel scheme.
He further informed that if any public transport buses were overcrowded commuters have the facility to send ‘sms’ message to the PSI on 7030949306.
Clarifying on many issues, Mapusa Traffic PI Tushar Vernekar suggested that panchayats have to play a bigger role to build better and safe roads in the village.
He also assured the Siolim panchayat and the locals to hold a joint site inspection to tackle dangerous junctions in the village.
Locals, Agnelo Noronha, Elison Fernandes and Amrut Agarwadekar also participated in the discussion.
Head Constable, Bhashir Mulla spoke on road safety and gave details of road accidents scenario in Goa and why citizens need to be safety cautious.
PSI Harish Raut Dessai and PSI Karishma Parulekar and others assisted in the meeting. Siolim Sarpanch Fermina Fernandes and other panch members were also present on the occasion.
