PANAJI:
Siolim lad Rajesh Dhargalkar is in seventh heaven, for the world's most expensive variety of mango -- Miyakazi mango -- has fruited on his farm in Siolim.
Miyakazi mangoes are Japanese in origin and are rare. They fetch an astronomical price, sometimes breaching the Rs one-lakh per piece depending on quality and are known for their sweet flavour and vibrant red skin.
"With proper care and attention we managed to create ideal conditions for this exotic variety to grow and begin yielding fruit," Dhargalkar said, adding that it could be a game-changer for agriculture in India.
"I’m thrilled over this success," he added.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant praised Dhargalkar for the feat and urged other Goan youth to explore innovation in agriculture as an option.
On Thursday Sawant feted Dhargalkar who posed with him with a sample of the exotic mango.
"Heartiest congratulations to Shri Rajesh Dhargalkar of Siolim for successfully cultivating the exclusive Miyazaki Mango, one of the world’s most premium and antioxidant-rich mango varieties, right here in Goa! Originally known as Taiyo no Tamago or “Eggs of the Sun”, this rare Japanese variety is grown in hot climates and known to yield fruit in just three years," Sawant wrote in a post on 'X'.
Sawant said such pioneering efforts are a great example of the potential of Goan soil and the vision of our farmers.
"Goa Government applauds and encourages more such agri-innovations that can redefine Goa’s horticultural and agricultural sector," he added.
According to Dhargalkar, it is extremely essential to maintain the pH levels of the soil in the 5.5 to 7.5 range, requiring the soil to be well drained.
"It requires patience and precision," he added.
